The body of a diver who went missing during a wreck dive in the Baltic Sea off Latvia in July has been found, according to Latvian State Police.
The diver disappeared on July 12 while diving with a group near a shipwreck approximately 10 nautical miles northeast of Roja, a coastal town in northwestern Latvia.
Four divers had entered the water at the site. Three returned safely to the surface, while the fourth diver failed to resurface.
Latvian Public Media reported on August 17 that State Police had confirmed the missing diver’s body had been found in the sea off Roja. Authorities have not publicly released further details about the circumstances in which the diver was located.
Search Began After July 12 Wreck Dive
The Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Latvian Coast Guard received a report about the missing diver at approximately 2:00 p.m. on July 12.
A large search operation followed, involving the Latvian Navy, State Border Guard and an aircraft from the National Armed Forces Air Force. Estonia also provided a search and rescue helicopter.
Several vessels in the area assisted during the initial stages of the operation.
According to Latvian Public Media, the search continued for more than 38 hours.
During the original search, authorities also planned to use underwater unmanned vehicles to examine the wreck and surrounding seabed.
The diver’s identity and nationality have not been publicly disclosed in the information released by authorities.
More Than a Month After the Disappearance
The confirmation that the diver had been found came more than a month after the July 12 disappearance.
No additional information has been released regarding the cause of the incident or the circumstances that led to the diver failing to return to the surface.
