Two Teenage Girls Found Dead After Freshwater Mussel Diving Trip in Fiji
Police divers in Fiji have recovered the bodies of two teenage girls who went missing while diving for freshwater mussels in a river near Korovou.
The bodies of two teenage girls, aged 18 and 15, have been recovered from a river at Deepwater Settlement in Korovou, Fiji, after the pair failed to return from a freshwater mussel diving trip.
According to Fiji Sun, the girls were reported missing after they did not return home from the river on Friday, 25 September. A search operation was subsequently launched.
Divers from the Fiji Police Mobile Force later recovered both bodies from the river on Saturday, 26 September, police confirmed.
Fijivillage also reported that police had recovered the two teenagers after they went missing while diving for freshwater mussels at Deepwater Settlement.
Cause of Death Not Yet Confirmed
Police have not yet announced how the two girls died.
Post mortem examinations are expected to be conducted to determine the exact causes of death, while police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
No further details about conditions in the river, water depth, currents, visibility, the girls’ diving experience, or the sequence of events leading to their deaths had been released at the time of publication.
The identities of the two teenagers have also not been publicly reported in the sources reviewed by Diventures.
Freshwater Mussel Diving
Local reports describe the teenagers as having gone diving for freshwater mussels.
