Newlywed Diver Dies During Honeymoon Scuba Excursion in Sri Lanka

A recreational scuba dive in Sri Lanka has ended in tragedy for a newly married Indian tourist, with a post-mortem examination now underway to determine the cause of death.

Mohammed Irfan, from the Malappuram district of Kerala, India, had travelled to Sri Lanka with his wife only days after their wedding. According to Indian media reports, the couple were joined on the trip by Irfan’s business partner and the partner’s wife.

The incident took place on Friday during a recreational dive. Family and friends reported that Irfan experienced severe chest pain while underwater before losing consciousness. Dive instructors and companions accompanying him brought him back to shore, where he was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.

Some early reports have raised the possibility of a cardiac event, but Sri Lankan authorities have not confirmed an official cause of death. A post-mortem examination is expected to establish the precise cause before Irfan’s body is repatriated to India.

Diving medicine specialists note that underlying cardiovascular conditions, including ones not previously diagnosed, can sometimes surface under the physical exertion of a dive. However, until official findings are released, any specific cause of death remains unconfirmed.

Diventures Magazine will provide updates on this case as further details emerge.
