Rangiroa Dive Boat Incident Leaves Diver With Traumatic Injuries

A serious dive boat accident in French Polynesia has left one diver with traumatic injuries and another dive professional seriously hurt following a pickup operation at one of the Pacific’s best-known drift diving sites.

The incident occurred in Tiputa Pass near Rangiroa, a destination internationally recognised for its strong currents, pelagic marine life, and advanced drift diving conditions. According to local reports first cited by Tahiti Nui Télévision, the accident unfolded as divers were waiting at the surface to be recovered after completing a dive.

Boat Reportedly Lost Control During Pickup

Reports indicate that the dive vessel was approaching the group when a wave reportedly threw the skipper overboard. With the boat suddenly left without immediate control, the vessel then struck two people who were still in the water.

One diver, identified in multiple reports as a German tourist, suffered catastrophic injuries resulting in the loss of part of a leg. A dive instructor involved in the incident reportedly sustained fractures to both legs. Emergency responders later evacuated both individuals to Tahiti for medical treatment.

The vessel eventually came to rest on nearby reef structures after the collision, according to local reporting. Authorities have not yet released a detailed official statement regarding the sequence of events or potential contributing factors.

Strong Currents Known in Tiputa Pass

Tiputa Pass is widely regarded as one of the signature dive locations in French Polynesia and is especially known for high-energy current conditions. Divers visiting the site commonly encounter fast-moving water, changing surface conditions, and complex pickup operations following drift dives.

Local reporting suggests the incident developed rapidly during the final stage of the dive excursion, when the group had already surfaced and was awaiting recovery by the boat.

While investigations are ongoing, the reports have renewed attention on the operational challenges associated with surface recoveries in strong-current environments.

Fundraising Campaign Emerges

A fundraising campaign has since appeared online for a diver identified as Brian, linking directly to the Rangiroa accident reports and describing injuries matching those reported by local media. The campaign states that the injured diver underwent emergency medical treatment following the collision.

Additional international coverage published on May 5 reported that the diver had returned to Germany after several weeks of hospital treatment in Tahiti. The same report stated that multiple surgeries and rehabilitation efforts are continuing.

Investigation Continues

At the time of publication, authorities in French Polynesia had not released further official findings regarding the accident or confirmed whether maritime safety investigations remain active.

The incident adds to a growing number of diving-related surface recovery accidents reported globally in recent years, particularly in locations where strong currents and wave action can complicate vessel handling during diver pickups.

For many divers, Rangiroa remains one of the world’s most sought-after drift diving destinations, drawing experienced visitors from across the globe. The accident, however, highlights how quickly conditions can change during even routine recovery procedures in demanding marine environments.
