Freediver Dies After Being Pulled Unconscious From Water in Florida
A man has died after being pulled unconscious from the ocean off Hallandale Beach in South Florida on Friday, 21 August.
Hallandale Beach Police responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. to the area of the 1800 block of South Ocean Drive following reports of an unresponsive person in the water.
According to local reports, Hallandale Beach Ocean Rescue lifeguards brought the man to shore and immediately began lifesaving measures, including CPR.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics subsequently transported him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police Believe Man Was Freediving
Hallandale Beach Police spokesperson Grace Mariot told local media that investigators believe the man had been freediving when he lost consciousness underwater.
However, authorities have not confirmed what caused him to lose consciousness.
The man’s identity and age had not been released at the time of reporting, pending notification of his family.
Police said there were currently no indications of foul play, while the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
Witnesses Describe Rescue Effort
CBS Miami reported that witnesses were heading towards a reef offshore when they encountered the emergency.
One witness described calm conditions that morning, with little wind or wave activity.
Another swimmer reportedly saw a snorkeler use a jet ski to assist in bringing the unconscious diver towards shore before emergency personnel continued the rescue effort.
Despite attempts to resuscitate him at the beach and his subsequent transport to hospital, the man did not survive.
Cause Remains Unknown
Although loss of consciousness during breath hold diving can occur for several reasons, including hypoxia, no specific cause has been established in this incident.
It would therefore be premature to attribute the death to shallow water blackout or any other particular mechanism until further information is released by investigators or medical authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
