A scuba diver enters the ocean searching for his father’s remains and finds himself trapped inside a sperm whale in Whalefall, an upcoming survival thriller from 20th Century Studios.
The studio has released a new official trailer for the film, offering a closer look at a story that places scuba diving at the centre of an unusual underwater survival scenario.
Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, who dives off the central coast of California following the death of his father. His objective is to search for his father’s remains, but the dive takes an extraordinary turn when Jay encounters a massive sperm whale and is swallowed.
According to the official synopsis from 20th Century Studios, Jay is trapped inside the whale with only one hour of oxygen remaining and must draw on lessons taught to him by his father as he searches for a way to survive.
A Survival Story Built Around Scuba Diving
The newly released trailer places the underwater environment at the heart of the film.
Jay is shown descending beneath the surface in scuba equipment before encountering marine life that includes a large squid and eventually the sperm whale that becomes central to the story.
Once inside the whale, the premise changes from an open water diving story into a confined survival thriller. Jay must deal with his remaining breathing supply, injuries, darkness and the unfamiliar environment surrounding him.
The film is being marketed by 20th Century Studios as a survival thriller rather than a conventional marine horror film.
For divers, however, the trailer is likely to attract attention for another reason. Scuba equipment, underwater decision making and the psychological challenges of being trapped beneath the surface are not simply background elements. They form part of the mechanism driving the story.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ Novel
Whalefall is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Kraus, first published in 2023.
The book follows a young diver attempting to recover his father’s remains before becoming trapped inside a sperm whale. Publishers Weekly described the novel as a science fiction thriller centred on the diver’s struggle for survival inside the animal.
Kraus is also involved in the film adaptation, sharing screenplay credit with director Brian Duffield.
Duffield directs the film, while the cast includes Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner and Josh Brolin as his father, Mitt Gardiner. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd also appear in the film.
The Real Animal Behind the Fiction
While the story itself is fictional, the choice of a sperm whale gives the film a connection with one of the ocean’s most remarkable deep diving predators.
Sperm whales are toothed whales that spend much of their time in deep water. NOAA Fisheries reports that their diet includes squid, sharks, skates and fish associated with deep ocean habitats. The animals use echolocation while searching for prey during their dives.
Squid are particularly closely associated with sperm whale feeding ecology, which makes their appearance alongside the whale in Whalefall consistent with the animal’s real feeding behaviour, even though the film’s central survival scenario remains a work of fiction.
The distinction is important. Whalefall should not be interpreted as depicting typical sperm whale behaviour toward divers or as a reconstruction of an actual diving accident.
Instead, the film takes characteristics of a real deep ocean predator and builds an extreme fictional survival situation around them.
Diving Meets the Survival Thriller
Whalefall may appeal particularly to the diving community due to its heavy reliance on the marine environment, diving equipment, and the limitations associated with underwater survival.
However, divers are expected to view some of the details concerning equipment, diving procedures, and underwater physics more critically than the general moviegoer.
Ultimately, though, the film presents a fictional story that uses diving and the deep-sea environment as key elements in building tension.
Whalefall is scheduled for theatrical release on October 16, 2026, and is directed by Bryan Duffield and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
