A diver was rescued after being reported in distress at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve on California’s Central Coast on Monday, August 24.
According to CAL FIRE’s San Benito Monterey Unit, emergency services were called to Whalers Cove at approximately 1:32 p.m. following reports of a diver in difficulty in the water.
Multiple agencies responded to the incident and located the diver in the ocean. Rescue personnel deployed an inflatable rescue boat, while a lifeguard entered the water to assist.
The diver was subsequently brought out of the ocean and evaluated by CAL FIRE and American Medical Response paramedics.
Authorities have not released the diver’s identity or provided details about what caused the distress. It has also not been reported whether the diver required transport to hospital following the medical assessment.
CAL FIRE highlighted the coordinated response between the agencies involved, describing the incident as an example of the importance of rapid emergency response along the California coastline.
Diving at Point Lobos
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is located on California’s central coast in Monterey County, south of Carmel.
California State Parks permits diving at Whalers Cove and Bluefish Cove. Divers are currently required to have reservations and provide proof of diving certification before entering the water.
Whalers Cove, where Monday’s rescue occurred, is one of the reserve’s designated diving access areas.
