Body of Missing Professional Diver Found at Setúbal Shipyard in Portugal

A 28 year old professional diver who disappeared while carrying out underwater work on a merchant vessel at a shipyard in Setúbal, Portugal, has been found dead.

According to Portugal’s National Maritime Authority, the diver disappeared on Wednesday, 19 August, while working on the sea chest of a merchant vessel berthed at Lisnave’s Mitrena shipyard in the municipality of Setúbal.

The alert was received at approximately 10:06 in the morning through Lisnave, prompting a search operation.

Search efforts involved personnel from the Sesimbra Lifeboat Station and the Maritime Police’s Forensic Diving and Underwater Operations Group. An aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force also participated in the operation.

The National Maritime Authority later confirmed that the diver’s body had been found during the afternoon.

Psychologists from the Maritime Police and Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergency were activated to provide support to the diver’s family.

The circumstances surrounding the diver’s disappearance and death have not been publicly confirmed. Authorities have not announced a cause of the incident.

The incident involved professional underwater work rather than recreational scuba diving.
