Eight Divers Rescued After Getting Into Difficulty Off Ċirkewwa, Malta
Eight scuba divers were brought safely ashore after getting into difficulty off Ċirkewwa, Malta, on Friday, 4 September.
A joint search and rescue operation involving the Armed Forces of Malta, the Civil Protection Department and the Malta Red Cross was launched after the group encountered difficulties in the water.
Five divers were initially located and brought back to shore. Once ashore, they informed emergency personnel that three other members of their group were still missing.
Rescuers continued searching the area until the remaining three divers were located and safely recovered.
According to Times of Malta, sources close to the rescue operation said the sea was very rough and strong currents had pushed the divers away from the shoreline. The group had reportedly been diving near the Rożi wreck, a well known dive site off Ċirkewwa.
All eight divers were foreign nationals, according to local reports.
A medical team from Mater Dei Hospital assessed the divers after they were brought ashore. All eight were discharged at the scene, with no hospital treatment reported.
Authorities had not publicly reported any equipment malfunction or other specific cause for the incident at the time of publication beyond the difficult sea conditions described by sources involved in the rescue operation.
